Concluding Blog.

The beginning of this blog assignment seemed simple at first, just play different games and blog about them every week and just continue to do that till May with what seemed like no meaning for it. What I learned from playing these games, was that it isn't a pastime time or just a form of entertainment (even though gaming does have those aspects). Instead I learned from playing and blogging about the games, I learned that it isn't something that nerds do in front of a computer or create using weird Math equations that help program the games. What gaming is and the time it takes to design the games, is a very complicated process with companies numbering in the hundreds that work on these game to bring fun to gamers all over the world. Something of the CEO's of these gaming companies are not even what you would call "nerds" they are just regular people with the gift and talent to know how these things work and have the means to turn their talents into forms of entertainment for the people of the gaming world. When I was doing this assignment at first it seemed like something that was just to pass the time, but everytime I would play a new game and blog about it my mind slowly began to change and soon I had the mindset that instead it was time well spent on learning the different things that each game contains and with a few games, reliving classic moments that I had while playing certain games (both old and new). Everytime I played a game I was trying to think if me and the skills I  have acheieved so far in my class are enough to create a game that is the same if not better than the ones I have been doing blog's on, but let's be real. I can't yet! The companies that have created these games have taken years of personal and professional experience and time to create sometimes one game. Also they are working with computer graphic technology that is out of my grasp in my class. But even though I can't create the next game of the year, I can't still make games in my class that others may find entertaining and I hope to achieve that in my class.

Metal Gear Solid 4!

Game Info/Structure:

Don't judge the game by it's cover, just because "Snake" the main character you play as in the game may appear old on the game case, he may change your mind when you see what he endures in his final mission in Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots. The graphics and the game play are truly awe-inspiring for our gaming generation, designed by Kojima Studios in Japan, MGS4 is truly one of my most favorite games to date. Being a longtime fan of both PS3 and the Metal Gear series I was really pleased to hear that a game was finally being made for the PS3 and did it make an impact on the system! The game's graphics are something that would catch anyone's eye for they seem so truly realistic that it seems hard to distinguish between real life and the game.
Example of the game's detailed graphics.

The picture on the right is just a small example of the amazing graphics for the game, and that's not even cutscene graphics, which are 10x better! The funny thing though is Hideo Kojima (the CEO of Kojima Studios) wasn't really pleased with the graphics and he knew they could have been developed even better. The story of the game is about the player taking control of Solid Snake a soldier that is tasked with taking down his clone brother Liquid Snake to stop him from unleashing war the United States which takes him all over the world from South America to Europe. The only character to have knowledge of is the main one: Solid Snake, for there are too many characters to describe in the game! As for the story in order to fully have in depth knowledge of it you would have to research or play the entire series. Snake in the game is an excellent soldier, possibly the best. But there is a reason why this game is his last mission, because he's dying since being a clone at birth he a disability that stuck with him that causes him to age faster with his body but not his actual age, causing him to look like he's in his 60's in the game, when he's actually only in his 30's.

Character Roster for the game.
What Others Think:

"If you’ve ever loved any one of the Metal Gear games, or any moments from the series, there will come a moment when MGS 4 will send your spirits soaring. If you’ve loved them all, well then there’ll be many, many more. It’s a masterpiece. But forget you read that. Go play it and find out for yourself. Because it’s the kind of game that, if you play it after being told it’s a masterpiece, might end up disappointing you because of the hype. So forget the hype. Forget that it’s a magnificent, ground-breaking, masterpiece. Just play it, and enjoy a dazzling, heart-lifting, voyage of discovery." - IGN UK, http://ps3.ign.com/articles/877/877611p3.html

"Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots is the most technically stunning video game ever made. It's also a fine example of storytelling prowess within its medium, combining gameplay and narrative so slickly and beautifully that it's impossible to extricate one from the other. It's likely you will emerge awestruck from your first play-through, wishing the experience would continue yet nonetheless satisfied with its conclusion. It's difficult not to sound hyperbolic when discussing MGS4 because every part of its design seemingly fulfills its vision, without compromise." - Kevin Van Ord, Gamespot, http://www.gamespot.com/ps3/adventure/metalgearsolid4/review.html

What I Think:

There isn't really much to say about this game really, I like everything about it that I can't really describe how some things are kind of good and how stuff is bad, well I can't say there is anything bad with the game because there isn't! Metal Gear Solid 4 is a truly amazing game and for that I'm going to give it a 10/10 and 5/5 stars for being a true change and positive change to gaming and gaming fans worldwide forever.

Resident Evil 5

Game Info/Structure:

In 2009, one of the greatest PS3 games was released that made the year a definite winner for good games, and the game that helped to do this was Resident Evil 5. The 5th installment of the award winning series developed by Capcom, the game is a sort of "next gen sequel" to PS2's Resident Evil 4 which won game of the year for both PS2 and Gamecube. The type of game play system was integrated and made much better from Resident Evil 4 which was the "over the shoulder approach" which many fans to the RE series thought was one of the best things that the company could have done to the games. The story of the game is about Chris Redfield (the player) trying to stop the spread of a deadly virus unleashed in Africa by a pharmaceutical company known as "Umbrella". The two main characters in the game are Chris Redfield and his B.S.A.A partner Sheva Alomar as they fight against the "zombie" terror in Africa and the main villain in the game returns from a couple Resident Evil games: Wesker, but in order to fully understand the story of Resident Evil 5 you would have to play the previous games or research them.
Gameplay screenshot with Chris Redfield on left

The game is perfect in every way possible.. literally! It offers co-op both online and offline, a long campaign mode a fun co-op survival mode (which can also be played in single player) and a versus mode. The story can last players many days for the levels in each part are very, very long and they don't bore the hell out of you. Also the multi-player experience in it is basically endless for the story if so fun to play over and over again, also you can do the "Mercenaries" survival mode online or offline. All in all the content in this game makes it a game to keep for it has tons and tons of replay value in it.

What Others Think:

"The co-op implementation is great and the extra unlockable provides more than enough incentive to play the game through multiple times. If the controls don't bother you, anybody can have a great time playing through this adventure." - ZTGameDomain

"Perhaps Resident Evil 5's most remarkable achievement is how it deftly straddles the line between the franchise's sometimes endearing, sometimes frustrating, legacy gameplay mechanics while incorporating more contemporary action adventure elements like enhanced interaction and exploration of environments and a decidedly more shooter-like control scheme." - Playstation Magazine.

"The creepy suspense of the earlier games has been replaced with an action-packed intensity that will instantly appeal to some gamers and disappoint others. As an action game, RE5 is a success, and there's a wealth of replayability through item collection, weapon upgrades, score chasing and the unlockable Mercenaries mode. But this is no gentle nudge to the formula of the previous main RE games; it's an evolution." - IGN

The new "zombies" in Resident Evil 5
What I Think:

When I first got Resident Evil 5, I knew it was a good choice for I had previously played Resident Evil 4 so I know how the game would work and how the game play is with the "over the shoulder" approach, but I wasn't ready for the change of graphics from PS2 to PS3 and the massive amounts of things to do in the game and stuff to unlock. But here isn't anything I don't like about this game, it's truly a good game and in my mind has plenty of replay value, although it may disappoint long time fans for not having the generic zombies that we all used to face in previous games, it doesn't matter because the new enemies in the game will make you think twice about the threat of some lame zombies. In my opinion I believe that Resident Evil 4 deserved the 2009 Game of the Year award and for that I give it a 10/10 and 5/5 stars.

NFS: Hot Pursuit a game only real racers can play ;)

Game Info/Structure:

Released November 16,2010 by EA Games, this version of NFS: Hot Pursuit was to be a reboot of the Need for Speed series and what a better way to start it off than with the Hot Pursuit series (which is hailed as the best racing games). At first many NFS fans had first thoughts that the game was going to be sketchy due to the fact that it was being developed by both EA and Burnout series developer: Criterion, but as soon as further gameplay was released and finally when the game debuted, those thoughts soon changed... The game is split up into the career/campaign mode, online modes, the campaign takes an average of 20-25 hours to beat (if you play it non-stop). But the campaign surprisingly has a lot of replay value in it, where you can beat every race with all the different cars offered. The online mode however is definitely endless and is fun for it puts you up against racers that are as good as you or possibly better which makes it a challenge for the player.
Picture of my ride in the game: Lamborghini Reventon.

The unique thing about Hot Pursuit is that all cars are incorporated into different classes ranging from: Sports (slowest cars) to Hyper (fastest cars) which helps players a lot and allows people to race against others in the same car class online which in turn was a true stroke of genius on the developers part.

Map of the area you play in the game.
What Others Think:

"What I love about Hot Pursuit is that it completely embraces that spirit of adolescent madness and just runs with it. There is no wedged-in storyline here. You can play as a cop or a racer, and you increase your rank or wanted level as you run people off the road, drift around corners, drive into oncoming traffic (as a racer), and generally behave like a motoring maniac. Along the way, you'll earn Bounty to unlock new cars, expand your arsenal of weapons/gadgets and open new sections of the Seacrest County map. The more you drive, crash, smash and win, the more cool stuff you get. It's simple, and it works." - IGN

"In addition to the single-player career mode and the Autolog overlay, Need For Speed: Hot Pursuit also has a full online multiplayer mode that allows up to eight players to team up and compete in cop and racer events. The mix of weapons allows for some real strategy online – coordinate as cops to drop spike strips ahead and then have those at the back fire EMPs. It's tough to avoid spikes when you're drifting out of control for a few seconds. Whereas Autolog provides a way to compete with your friends at everyone's leisure, the competitive online multiplayer brings everyone together for a head-to-head battle. The party system is intuitive and smooth, and you continue to build your Bounty with everything you do online. There's no split-screen multiplayer. But I played several sessions of couch-based Hot Pursuit with my fellow IGN editors, and we had a blast passing the controller back and forth." - IGN

"Need For Speed: Hot Pursuit is pure over-the-top driving entertainment. The cars and environments are gorgeous, the crashes are spectacular, and the new Autolog feature breathes new life into the time-honored tradition of video game competition among friends. The single-player races can become somewhat repetitive and there are some presentation issues, but overall, Hot Pursuit is a blast. If you’re looking for a high-octane racer that grabs on tight but doesn’t take itself too seriously, give this one a shot." - IGN

The game that changed an entire generation: James Bond Goldeneye 64

Game Info/Structure:

The day that Goldeneye was released in 1997 (and for the week that followed) the responses and reviews were unlike any other for a game, gamers and professional game critics were in shock at how amazing Goldeneye 007 was and how it would become the first game to have an incredible split screen multi-player integrated into it. The game was developed by a sub company of Nintendo: "Rare" was considered to be the most influential shooters of all time due to it's incredible representation of the movie and also the because it is the first console game to have an addictive multi-player. The storyline for the game closely follows that of the Bond film which I could explain, but it would be 10x easier if you watched the movie for yourself or played the game in order to understand the story of the game. The characters are easier to explain because the only main character to know is the one that you play as which is James Bond! Bond is a secret agent for the British MI6 that is tasked with many different missions that would "crush" a normal soldier. Another achievement for the game is that it is the first game to actually incorporate a stealth like fighting/shooting system into the game.
Screenshot of gameplay
The campaign mode of the game is enough to keep a player going at the game for weeks and maybe even months due to it's incredible locations and types of objectives in the mission. starting in 1997 the game's campaign is still being played by millions all over the world 14 years later.

Multiplayer Screenshot

But what truly shocked gamers and critics about this game was the multiplayer mode that was developed. It was the first game of it's kind to have 4 player split screen and that allowed 4 people to simultaneously fight each other which shocked gamers worldwide. Many people have even claimed that they sometimes get sick of the newer multiplayer games like COD or Battlefield and decide to go back to this for they find it awesome to invite some friends over and have a party with the game (which is basically what I do).

What Others Think:

"Upon first seeing GoldenEye at the E3 convention, I was underwhelmed. I mean, here was yet another first-person shooter, with the only features setting it apart being the neat-looking sniper rifle and the fact that it was based on a movie that just about everyone had forgotten about. I couldn't have been more wrong. GoldenEye not only lives up to the "quality, not quantity" mantra that Nintendo continues to tout, it surpasses it.

The music in GoldenEye is absolutely perfect, and adds a lot of ambience to the game. For instance, one of the later levels starts in an elevator, complete with laid-back elevator music. When you exit the elevator, the level's real soundtrack kicks in. A minor point, sure, but it demonstrates the detail of the game. The only thing that could make GoldenEye's sound better is the inclusion of speech." - Jeff Gerstmann, Gamespot

"The game is brilliant in both the single-player mode, opening up new weapons each time a difficulty level is cleared (the cougar magnum in the easy difficulty level), and in multiplayer mode, making it the best multiplayer game on the system (edging Mario Kart 64 by a hair). In fact, we can say with a clear conscience that Goldeneye 007 is the best single-player first-person game on any system." - Unknown Writer, IGN

So as you can see Goldeneye has nothing bad said about it, why? you may ask well because there is nothing wrong or flawed with the game, and that is why it deserved the title as The Most Influential Shooter of All Time.

Screenshot of the levels in the Campaign mode.
My Point of View:

Being an N64 owner and having this game since the day it came out, I have to say that I am a dedicated fan to it and occasionally have a few friends come over and we face each other because we all still find the multiplayer to be fair, fun and highly addictive. I really enjoy the story mode because I myself am a Bond fan since I was young so the story is perfect and really close to the original movie, and in my mind this is the only video game that was put from movie to game that is actually good. The graphics are the best anybody can have for an N64 game. In my opinion I too believe it is the most influential shooter ever and for that I give it 10/10 and 5/5.

BMX Backflips 2, the sequel to the widely praised Flash game is here!!

Game Info/Structure:

Released within a year or 2 ago, the sequel to one of the most praised Flash games to hit the internet came out and in full swing, BMX Backflips 2! The first BMX game dominated on the internet for many months for its crazy addiction and eagerness to be played over and over again. But it's the sequel that really packs-a-punch as an incredible Flash game all over the internet due to the massive improvements made to it to make it even more addicting for the original game's fans. But there is a couple things with the second that are the same as the first, including the story: there is none! Also the character remains the same: a mysterious biker (the only difference with this biker is that he looks different!) The game was designed by the same guy that created the original: David Thorburn, the game has been praised for it's many improvements, only a few can be explained (due to the amount of them). The first and major thing players will notice is the amount of challenges (which you can choose!) from in the game, which is well over the amount of challenges offered in the original game. Another feature is the ability to upload your score to the global leader board and compare your score with people on the other side of the world! Also with the challenges the player has the ability to choose a challenge over and over again without restarting the game!

Screenshot of the game's gameplay.

What Others Think:

"Arguably one of Teagames' best and most popular games gets the one-up treatment with BMX Backflips 2.You can expect to find the same silky-smooth motion, animation and physics in this version, as well as new tasks to complete for each new level. What has changed is there is now a level selection screen with which to choose the level you wish to play in any order, and even repeat the ones you enjoy most. Control is still with the arrow keys: up and down for peddling forward and back; left to lean back; right to lean forward. Use space to brake.

To master these excellent BMX Flash games, you must learn to lean back while peddling just enough to lift the front wheel slightly off the ground. Doing so gives you the added speed necessary to jump over chasms and climb up steep inclines. Balance is key, as you don't want to wind up on your head and lose a life. You begin with five (5) lives, and when you have used them all the game is over.

Analysis: I found only minor complaints with this version. First, a player may not exit a level once it has begun. There were times that I found myself beginning the same level again when I thought I had chosen differently. An exit button would have been nice to allow the player to correct the error before continuing. Secondly, the high score table is rendered meaningless by players' scores that are no longer comparable. Since a player may now play any level of choice, achieving a high score may be as easy as repeating a single level one has mastered until a high score is achieved.

David has made one of his greatest games even better by opening up the levels and granting freedom of choice. This has the added benefit of making the game accessible to the casual gamer not interested in completing the whole game. Pair that with all-new levels of brilliant design and what you end up with is an all-new BMX Backflips game that surpasses the original in almost every way. If you enjoy this BMX game, be sure not to miss the original, BMX Backflips, and a variation on the theme, BMX Star, and all the rest of Dave's excellent games on his Teagames.com website." - Jay, www.jayisgames.com

My Point of View:

I was extremely impressed with all of the ways the game was improved from the original and kudos to that! The challenges in the game offer more fun and game playing time then the original as well, but for me this game also gets boring at a fast rate and for that it is another game in which I play usually when I am bored out of my mind... But overall the game can be generally fun to play at first,  and then it becomes something to play once and a while. But if I had the choice of either playing the original or this game I would have to go with the sequel of course! But to me this isn't such a good game that I praise it and play it whenever I can, instead it has just become for me to pass the time, but it's still good so I give it an 8/10 and a 4/5.

BMX Backflips

Game Info:

The game itself is a 2-D side scrolling biking game that has you complete different challenges in the game in order to advance to the next level in the game and finally to the end of the game. There are many things I like about this game, like the amount of entertainment you can get out of playing it and how simple the controls for it are, but there are also some things that there are to dislike about this game compared to it's sequel like the idea of only have 12-14 easy challenges that can all be completed within minutes and a minor glitch in which the tires of the bike just stop moving after a few challenges are completed, a problem which hasn't been fixed since the game was released but it was fixed in the game's sequel. The storyline and characters are extremely easy to understand, for one: there is no story! Also the character is simple, its just a mysterious biker that you play as. The game and the graphics were not created a big or legitimate gaming company, instead it was created by a small time game designer who ended up creating one of the coolest game to play on the internet! Although the game itself wasn't created using any high tech equipment, David Thorburn (the game's creator) admitted to creating the entire game using Adobe Flash, which by many has been hailed as a marvel in Flash game design.

What Others Think:

"A brand new game just released by David Thorburn, BMX Backflips is another marvel in Flash game design. The game has you navigating hills, half pipes, and jumps on a BMX bike, while performing wheelies and backflips for points. The game is mission oriented and presents various levels of increasing complexity. This variety combined with solid Flash programming, smooth animation and realistic physics is what makes the game shine. The only downside: sound is sorely missing from most of his games. But that's a small complaint compared to how enjoyable his games are. David tells me that he aims towards minimalism in his designs to compensate for Flash's lack of power. And his games are a testament to those who emphasize gameplay over graphics: they arguably create the games that are more fun to play" - Jay, www.jayisgames.com

What I Think:

In my opinion I believe many are right in saying that this is a Flash game design marvel but it can get extremely boring after a play through or two and to me I only play when I am really bored and just want something to do. I first noticed this game about 2 years ago and have just gone back to it when I have nothing to do at home, I have beaten it over 10 times but always forget to record what score I get each time, but as soon as I noticed there was a sequel I had to test it out and ever since I played it, I haven't been back to the original due to all the cool new features that were added in the second one. But if your a fan of side scrollers and biking I recommend that you play both BMX Backflips and it's sequel, especially the sequel!! So all in all I would give BMX Backflips a 7/10 and 3/5.

Just Cause 2

Game Info:

When the first JC was released a few years ago, I thought it was one of the worst games that was released on the PS2 and vowed to never play it again, but when I downloaded the demo for Just Cause 2 when it was released last year my mindset on the Just Cause series changed for the better! The whole game is incredible! The story puts you in the shoes of "The Agency" operative Rico "Scorpio" Rodriguez as he is sent to the tropical isle of Panau to take care and somewhat dismantle the dictatorship of a government that runs it. The story mode itself is one of the longest I have played for an action-adventure game with a GTA like sort of atmosphere of getting a 100% completion, which like GTA takes a while in this game. The animation of the game was created by Square Enix while Avalanche studios created the actual game play engine including the epic parachuting and adrenaline filled game play. Everything is what I like about this game there is nothing I can really dislike about this game besides the somewhat terrible and clique cutscenes that were put into the story mode. But there are many things to like about the game from its many kilometers of free roam to the ability to be able to roam around the map and not have to constantly do story missions. The cool concept of JC2 is that there is some much action stuff to do it makes you feel as if your the star of your own action game or movie. Many people try to compare JC2 to many things but the simplest way of doing it is comparing to both games and movies like so: James Bond meets XxX meets the GTA series.
Game Protagonist: Rico Rodriguez and a small pinch of the game's map.
What Others Think:

"There are plenty of games that attempt to make you feel like the star of your own action movie, but few have done it with as uproariously fun results as Just Cause 2. Or with explosions as big and as frequent for that matter." - Tech Digest

"Just Cause 2 is just as enjoyable as it looks. Although the game has a few annoying problems to speak of, this stunt-filled affair is one of the best open-world games I've played in a long time. The action is spectacular, the game world is tremendous and enemies can be tackled in a seemingly infinite number of ways. This is a title that every gamer with a taste for action should play." - IGN PS3 review.

 What I Think:

About a week after the game was released on March 23,2010 I decided to buy Just Cause 2 after falling in love with the demo and this was one of those games that after I had played it for a little bit I had realized that it was definitely worth the $50 to keep the game! Not only does the intense amount of area in the map allow the free roam to not bore a player, but the different things to do that somewhat connect to the story definitely make the story mode even interesting. JC2 is a game that would attract all types of action players, including adrenaline junkies and explosion junkies, for JC 2 has plenty of both! Although in my mind the story is somewhat terrible in how it is structured and how the cutscenes were poorly designed, but once you get over that minor matter the game itself is truly incredible. Got it exactly a year ago and I'm still playing it on a regular basis to get the thrills of adrenaline out of it ! For a free roaming, open world, action-adventure Just Cause 2 clearly defines what the genre should be and for that I give a definite 100% and 10/10.

* The video is an action clip I filmed using the game's in-game video recorder.

Shaq Fu

Game Info/Structure:

Created in 1994, Shaq Fu puts the player in the shoes of professional Basketball player Shaquille O'Neal as he is teleported to a different world where he is set to fight against some of the deadliest warriors in the world to prove he is the ultimate fighter and also to rescue an old kung-fu master's son that has been taken to the world and become possessed. The game doesn't have any real free roam and has the same system as Mortal Kombat with the 2 fighters on one screen with the HUD set up with the health at the top. The game has a difficulty system intergrated into it to make it easier for new or experienced players to make it a fun and also challenging experience for every time of player. The graphics and gaming engineering was created by a company during the "Sega era" and was the main designer of the game. The music in the game is alright, at best... but it isn't the greatest there's only a few songs in the game that tend to not get annoying after 2 minutes. But even though the game's screenshots may seem like it looks good, the game is actually very bad and can be a very demanding game to be for many Sega gamers.

Screenshot of gameplay.
What Others Think:

"To say that Shaq Fu is bad is like calling genocide 'a little naughty'. I'm not kidding, this game frequently appears on lists of the worst games ever, and there is even an entire website dedicated to finding and purchasing every single copy of the game and then destroying them."

"This is, hands-down, the worst fighting game I have played in my life. Every single thing that could possibly be wrong about the gameplay manages to be spectacularly wrong, from the controls, the way you execute special moves, the health bar, everything." - www.questionablefilms.com/articles_shaqfu.html

What I Think:

So as you can see the game is generally hated by about every Sega gamer in the world for it's unfair fighting system/ A.I and the ability to not be able to properly execute any special moves and/or combos. I believe this is one of the few fighting games that have been created that we should all forget about, and also never speak of it again. So in my honest opinion I believe Shaq Fu or Whack Fu deserves a 2/10  and a 0/5 for it being a completely terrible game.

Mortal Kombat makes it return to the PS3 and Xbox 360 and is a definite fighting titan!

What I Have To Say:
I have to say this is the best fighting game ever and so far the best Mortal Kombat game ever, giving the fans what they want. And if you're new to this klassic game, relax, the story mode shows all the previous events that occurred from Mortal Kombat 1 to 3. You'll get to see the hidden truth and secrets from each of the kharacter's bio's. The game gives something new to the fans such as the X-ray mode which is when you injure the enemy fighter and you see the damage each hit causes to the other person, also there is the Challenge Tower which is a set of over 300 challenges that you must complete to unlock a secret at the end which seems easy but the higher the challenge number, the harder the challenges become. "The Krypt gives you a chance to unlock many fascinating things and there is a somewhat scary easter egg if you remain idle in the krypt for a little bit. A simple and easy way to learn your fatalities since everyone loves to do when every fight is over can be learned through the new Fatality Practice Mode which allows players to practice their favorite characters fatalities until they have perfected them. Plus there are many crazy stage fatalities that will keep you stunned and excited just like the x-ray moves, all of which never get old! The game itself contains a little more than the usual amount for a fighting game and is recommended for people at least 16 years old. The game is faster than any Mortal Kombat with excellent combo systems and damages. The reboot of MK is showing that it deserves the title as fighting game of the year with it's Ladder mode, Challenge Tower, Tag Team Ladder, and also the endless opportunities to play against many other players with online fighting. If your into fighting games this is the game for you, it definitely beats Street Fighter and Tekken. Believe me, once you become skilled in the game everything will be easy and playing this, you won't be disappointed.

Example of an X-Ray Move in MK.

Picture of new mode in MK known as: Test Your Sight
When it was first announced during 2010, many were at first worried because of the recent failures of MK games that were released including MK:Armageddon which was considered the worst MK game of the series and was highly shunned, so with this the idea came that a new MK might be a bad idea. But when game videos and finally the demo was released, that was when jaws hit the floors and stayed there, for Midway and Netherealm Games teamed up to create what would become a definite fighting game to have in your collection. The game has received many positive reviews from gaming websites and shows worldwide for making it a groundbreaking reboot of the fighting series, receiving mostly 8/10's and 80's with many places including IGN, which gave the game and 8.0 and G4 (specifcally X-Play) which gave the game 5/5 stars. The only negative reviews the game received was the unfairness of the final boss in the game: Shao Khan

Reviews about final boss:

"Needlessly Cheap"- Game Revolution

"forces you to fight cheap tactics with cheap tactics, instead of a fair fight, like the other nine matches it takes to get to him"- IGN

But in my opinion after finally being able to beat the final boss in both Story Mode and Arcade Ladder Mode the game itself overall is a definite game to have in your collection and has alot of play and replay value in it to assure that you won't get bored of it for a while. I bought the game 2 weeks ago and has barely scratched the surface of different things to do in the game and can't wait to go online and challenge different "fighters" around the world. I give the new MK reboot to the series a 100% and a 10/10.

Super Smash Bros. Melee: Adventure Mode

Back yet again with another Melee blog, this time it is on the highly loved and played Adventure Mode! What you do in adventure mode is a cool idea that is highly looked upon by many players, what the mode is based upon is the idea of creating a legitimate story around why all the Nintendo characters all fighting one another in the game. The game is a parody on many games that have a campaign mode, but what makes this "campaign parody" so incredible is that it actually has it's own story that is revolved around all the Smash Bros. characters, and the thing that makes it neat is that there are no cutscenes to help further describe the game's story, instead you are to make up your own story until the ending when you realize who the real menace is. In Adventure Mode you are allowed to choose any characters that are playable in the game and that have been unlocked and with that character you take them on the adventure through many different Nintendo game realms until you get to the last level. In the game mode you have the options of choosing your character, changing the difficulty (which ranges from very easy- very hard), and finally you are allowed to customize how many stocks you have (and not the stocks on Bay St. or Wall St. but how many lives your character is allowed to lose before they are forced to restart or receive a game over. Although the travel through different gaming realms is cool, usually at the end of each level their is a "boss character" you are to face that resides over the level and doesn't take to kindly to your character being there. All these aspects of Adventure Mode make it a truly incredible game mode and one that is definetly something that can be played over and over again.

Super Smash Bros. Melee: Stages

Back again with another post about Melee, this time I'm talking about the Stages that are within the game, and the types of stages they are and how they separate the men from the boys. The stages in the game are based from many different famous battlegrounds and locales in different Nintendo games, including Hyrule Temple from the Legend of Zelda games to the Planet Brinstar from the Metroid Prime series, all of which have exotic graphics, detail and looks to them. Even though Smash Bros. Brawl consists of over 30 stages, Melee holds up it's end of the bargain by having at least 15-20 stages for players to show their might on, and the maps come in all sizes from small close quarters fighting based maps to large scale/all out brawl fest maps that are meant to have a lot of people fighting on it. What makes the stages in Melee different from N64 besides the graphics is the new mechanic of on going things in the background that can sometimes affect the stages or the stages themselves that could affect game play. The following video is an example of a how a moving stage can be a somewhat factor in a battle.

As you can see the game was changed quickly, even though the player was against A.I it can affect how you play when the stage is moving and different objects in the background can come to either aid you or work against you causing you to not only to watch your back against other players or A.I but also you need to watch the enviroment. Since many or most stages in Melee have this factor with them it makes it a somewhat challenging task for many of those that are veterans to the Smash Bros. series.

As you can see from the picture above, Melee offers players many different stages that players can choose to brawl on with places stretching from Starfox's Ship to Pokemon Stadium, and many in between Melee does not let players down with the amount of stages to select from. In Melee there are 32 stages fight on, and of those 32 stages, there are over 10 stages that have the "enviroment effect" to them that make them somewhat challenging. Even though some stages present a challenge to fight other players Melee proves with it's stages
and characters that it is able to take the spot as the #1 Gamecube to ever be made.

Super Smash Bros. Melee: Character Roster.

After the release of the first Super Smash Bros. many of the gamers where demanding for more and more of their favorite characters to be put into the next game if they were to make one, and so when Melee was created and released, Nintendo had answered all the fans demands by adding in more characters then many could imagine for a fighting game! When you first boot up Melee you are greeted to a extensive roster with many familiar faces from the original game (which was about 12 characters) characters like: Fox, Mario and D.K return to have more face offs against other Nintendo characters but in Melee, Nintendo decided to be over generous and add an extra 13 characters to the game to make it an even better reason to own the game! Even though the game's sequel Super Smash Bros. Brawl boasts an even bigger roster than Melee, but the roster for Melee is a huge advancement from the original N64 game.

Original Roster for Melee
As you can see from the picture it isn't much of an improvement from the original Smash Bros.but it is a big enough addition to please many of SSB fans around the world, and oddly enough Nintendo decided to add the secret characters from the N64 as playable characters right from the start!

Full/Final Roster for Melee
In this pic it shows the true reason of why Melee is a game that is different from it's predecessor, with an extra 13 characters that span over 6 famous Nintendo games, although it is a good amount of characters they also certain requirements that the player is made to meet in order to unlock and play as those characters, which makes Melee a game that's definitely worth playing over and over.

"You say you want a revolution?", well The Beatles: Rock Band creates one for all music games!

Game Info/Structure:

WOW. That's all I can say to describe this genius creation of a music game, being a Beatles fan I was excited to hear they were creating a Rock band that was devoted just to the music archives of The Beatles, and once I heard it was being released I made it my mission to have on my game shelf, and a good decision it was to have it! Let me start off with things that I dislike about the game, and believe the list is very, very short. The only problem with the The Beatles: Rock Band was that the company didn't continue to release more song (DLC) after a month or so when many fans were demanding more song from the "Hard Day's Night" and "Help!" albums instead the flow of DLC's just stopped at the end of the "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" album, but besides that small issue there is nothing I dislike about the game. Now to begin the long list of stuff I like about this game, I will start with the amount of songs included with the game; spanning over a decade of Beatles songs, the game includes over 45 songs to start and over 20 more that available as downloadable content. Also another aspect about the game that I like is the fact that the developers highly detailed each one of the Beatles to match their looks during that year or time period! The set of the game is really simple, you play each note as it floats down a "guitar highway" towards the bottom of your screen, with the ultimate goal of achieving 100% notes played by the end of the song chosen. The characters are also very simple: John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr, the four members of the famous rock group: The Beatles.  The storyline is easy to follow, even easier if you know the group insides and out! You are thrust into being a "member" of the group and travel throughout the world playing songs at many famous venues and almost experiencing it as they did, the animation of the game is somewhat simple and is an exact reflection of the original Rock Band's, but with a little more detail added to the characters to give it more creativity to it. The sound and music of this game are truly awe-inspiring for it is you playing all of the "Fab Four's" classic's again in your home!

What Others Think:

"The Beatles bleed from every asset in the game. Along with the new vocal harmonization, the art direction is specifically meant to convey what the Beatles were all about. The models themselves are distinctly recognizable, but keep that cartoony flair that we love from Rock Band. You can play through all their famous venues (and “dreamscapes” reflecting their songs during their recording career, such as retro russian imagery during “Back In The USSR”). Their movements are spot-on, the screaming girls are there, and they even have the pre-performance banter built into the songs themselves.

But the real showstopper for me was how markedly different the game is from other music and rhythm games. Though the formula is the same, and you can play with up to six people, this is the first game that really emphasizes you playing an instrument and singing at the same time. It’s a different kind of challenge, and for me, it was far more satisfying than the typical wankery of over-the-top guitar tracks and challenges.

Not to say the game isn’t tough, of course. On expert difficulty, you don’t get Dragonforce levels of ridiculousness, but all the members of the beatles were amazingly techncal players in their own right (hell, check out Ringo’s drumming on “A Day in the Life” or “Rain”). If you’re coming into this game looking for pretzel-fingered mind benders or endurance challenges, this is not a game for you. If you’re looking for some of the best songs ever written in rock and roll and a good time playing them, I would venture to say that this is a better investment than even the other Rock Band games.

And besides, it’s the fricking Beatles. This is the consummate party game. Everyone knows their songs. Plus, all songs are unlocked from the get-go in Quick Play, and the Easy difficulty is defaulted to no-fail, so even Beatles fans unfamiliar with Rock Band can drop in with minimal learning curve." - Alex Lifschitz, Gear Live: Playfeed.

My Point of View:

Since I got the game on 9.9.09, I have beaten the main storyline and achieved the highest level of being a guitar and bass player for the band (which isn't really hard to begin with). My highest score ever on the game was over 1.5 mill with a 4 player band (which isn't full seeing as the max is 6 players) on the song "I Want You (She's So Heavy)" which is well over a 7 minute song, but easy enough to get over a million on as long as the people that are in the band have had enough experience in playing the game before. Since I've beaten the game I've helped people get to higher ranks by joining their "band" and assisting them in getting a really high score for their own band  Besides that I drop in to play a few jam sessions with some buddies that I met while playing online, and so far until I get more messages for help or to play with friends I just jam solo with the Fab Four. In my own personal opinion I give The Beatles: Rock Band, a definite 100% and well deserved and well earned 10/10.

Super Mario Crossover FTW? (PC Only)

Game Info/Structure:

Since being released in 1985, Mario has conquered the gaming world for many years on almost every platform from SNES to the Wii, and finally it has found a way to dominate on the PC. At first it started out as a gaming sensation and revolution, allowing players to play as both Mario and a new character (his brother Luigi), but it didn't stop there Mario continued to wow players in his many sequels with his bro. Many have tried to recreate this game as a flash on the computer but all have failed, for they have only created simple "clones" of the original, but one game enthusiast has done the unthinkable! Jay Pavlina or "Exploding Rabbit" (username and site name) has been able to recreate a flash version of Mario with a few extra add-ons to maximize the gameplay of Mario on a whole new level. The structure of the game stays true to the original Super Mario Bros. the level's are the same, the graphics and even the music, somewhat. A few new aspects have been introduced into the "crossover" edition of Super Mario Bros. including a difficulty system with levels of "Super Easy" to "Extremely Hard", so the game can offer a challenge or just be fun to those inexperienced with the game! But what makes this game different from the original is that you only had 2 characters to choose from: Mario & Luigi, but in crossover you have over 8 characters to choose from! the roster is as follows: Mario- from the original.
Link- from the Legend of Zelda Series.
Samus- from the Metroid Prime Series.
                              Simon- from the Castlevania Series.
Mega Man- from the Mega Man Series.
Bill Rizer- from the Neo Contra Series.
                              Ryu Hayabusa- from Ninja Gaiden.
Jason/Sophia- from the Master Blaster games.
Included in the new crossover over flash game is the ability to activate cheats that you can unlock by meeting or completing certain hidden challenges throughout the entire game. The storyline is also the exact same as the original: you play as one for the 8 characters and have to rescue your princess that has been taken to Bowser's Castle, along the way you enter many other castles defeating many Bowser's only to discover your princess is in another castle. The sound and the music is the same also, if you play as Mario, the game is uniquely designed to play music from the game of whatever character your playing as which overall makes the game so much better.

What Others Think/Game Link:

"What’s impressive about Super Mario Crossover, aside from the painstaking recreation of the original game, are how these six disparate characters all feel like they were ripped from their own classic NES titles, but fit in perfectly to the Mario levels. I’m impressed with the amount of tweaking this must have taken, to keep the integrity of the original characters but also make them work with the enemy behaviors and level designs of Super Mario Bros." - Chris Kohler, Wired Magazine.

"Super Mario Bros. Crossover is, really, nothing short of genius. The game’s remixer, Jay Pavlina has done an excellent job of combing our childhood faves into a game that feels less like a mashup and more like one that was organically made." - Chris Gampat, 2d-x.com

Link to play game: http://www.explodingrabbit.com/games/super-mario-bros-crossover

My Point of View:

When I first played crossover I thought it was only a flash similar to the original, but once I started it up and noticed all the characters entering the main menu I was amazed. Players will love the new difficulty system along with the ability to choose characters from classic and favorite Nintendo games, there is absolutely nothing that I dislike about this game, Jay Pavlina is a genius for creating the game like he did there is no glitches or bugs in the game and every few months he adds a new character to the game roster. So far since I have started playing at home, I have reached world 4-2 using Link as my main character and my current score is 382, 931 with over 10 lives.  I have began to notice that the easiest way to beat Bowser is to use Jason/Sophia as the character for every stage that has "-4" in it because he can grab onto the roof and drive so it makes it easier for you not to get hit by the obstacles or the flames Bowser shoots at you. In my opinion I believe that Super Mario Crossover is a definite game to play a lot and have in the bookmarks section of your computer and so I give Super Mario Crossover a 100% and a 10/10.

Demonic Defence 3!! (PC Only)

What started out as a simple stick defense game on stickpage.com, Demonic Defence 3 has transformed into a computer gaming sensation across many other sites. There are only a few things to say that are likeable about DD 3 (not saying its bad, just not a lot of things), its good for things like having a continuous level progression that never ends and also how you are able to buy different weapons and spells and even upgrade your castle`s defence`s with such things as Archers, Gunners, and just constantly upgrading the fortifications. The funny aspect about this game that`s different is that there is no real storyline, but your basic objective is to protect your castle from fully being and surviving for as many levels as possible with no real end to the game. The animations for DD 3 are really quite simple for it is a stick game with stick figures and these figures can be created and designed like they are in the game using Adobe Flash Professional. The strategies for the game are really based on how you have your spells and castle strength/defence of the castle set up in the earlier rounds (the stronger and more defence, the easier it will be later on). The music that plays in the background while you play the game is repetitive but also very amusing to listen to, for it gets you in the mood to actually try and defend your castle :P

Reviews for Demonic Defence 3:
http://www.newgrounds.com/portal/view/194317

My Point of View:

I have been playing Demonic Defence for over a few weeks now and have become fully accustomed to a perfect strategy to get farther in the game's leveling system, in my opinion the game is good to play, but play it too much and you are expected to get bored very, very fast. My score right now is over 1.1 million and I have reached level 102 and saved it there, I haven't played it since. So I have basically given up on it, so in my opinion DD 3 is a good game to play if you are looking to pass the time if your bored, see as it never ends, but never the less I would give DD 3 a 8/10/.

Battlefield Bad Company 2

Game Structure:

Starting off in modern times between 2009-2010, BFBC 2 is about a unit of elite U.S army soldiers that pursue a Russian war criminal from South America to the U.S to capture him and the dangerous weapon from WW2 that he holds in his possession, with the ability to turn the tides of the war for either the Russians or the Americans. Many aspects of the Battlefield series are very highly liked by all shooting game fans, and what defies BFBC 2 as a shooting game is the intense amount of detail put into the destruction caused by players playing online or single player that makes the outfit of war seem more realistic than that of the Call of Duty series. In my mind there isn't really much to not like about the game, except one minor glitch that hasn't been fixed and that is the loading system for online, in which if doesn't load properly will reset your rank and your weapons cache to the lowest during the game session of which your signed into. Besides that issue nothing is to be disliked about this game by me. Developed by DICE gaming company based in Sweden and EA in Canada, BFBC 2 has destruction animations like no other game, that is thanks to the Frostbite graphics/destruction system developed by DICE, this unique system is what brings the real building destruction of war to both the single player and online modes, this is what truly makes BFBC 2 a game to have on your shelf.  The storyline of the game is at the most: ok..., only because it doesn't really go anywhere once you beat it, just basically ends but it's the characters of the story that make it worth playing. In the game you play as wild card, but by-the-book soldier Preston Marlowe in the army unit known as Bad Company, along with Demo Expert: Haggard, Techy: Sweetwater and Commanding Officer: Sarge. The difficulty in this game sadly, isn't anything challenging for I have beaten the game on it's hardest mode and know it is anything but challenging. During the late weeks of December though the game became extremely worthy to play when the Vietnam DLC was released which allowed players to travel back to the infamous Vietnam War and relive many events during the war against other online players.

Walkthrough for Single Player Mode:  http://www.gamewinners.com/Cheats/index.php/More:Battlefield:_Bad_Company_2:_Video

My Point of View:

Since I have owned the game, I have beaten it on the hardest difficulty and also the easiest difficulty for the Single Player mode, and in the online mode the maximum level for the ranking system is level 50 and since purchasing the game back last March I have only made it to level 26 because the ranking in BFBC 2 is longer and more difficult to achieve than it is in the online mode for the Call of Duty series. Although it takes longer to rank it is a good thing because the game realistically shows that you need skill and patience in order to rise higher in the ranks of the military rather than just rank really fast like Call of Duty 4, Modern Warfare 2 and Black Ops. Like the many of the Call of Duty titles, Battlefield is for sure game to grab the attention of many serious shooting game fanatics and is a definite competitor against the COD series, so all those that love destruction and shooting: Battlefield Bad Company 2 is the game for you!

Streets of Rage fights from Sega in '91 to Sony in 2011 still as the greatest beat 'em up games ever.

Created in 1991 for the Sega Genesis, Streets of Rage was one of the first games to be a "foundation" of later fighter and beat 'em up besides Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat. The game was designed and "constructed" during the early 90's and revolves around three former police officers turned vigilantes that fight to take down a crime syndicate that has taken over the city they reside in. The animation/graphic of the game are pure "old school for they are 8-bit graphic animations rather than the 3-d animations seen today. The game was developed by longtime award winning company: Sega, but mainly designed by a small group of developers known only as: "Team Streets of Rage" that developed the game, while it was published under the name of Sega. The gameplay structure of Streets of Rage is very straight forward known as a "beat em up" classic and is a side scroller, similar to Super Mario and like many game it's structure has the usual material: difficulty system, character selection and control change. Sadly though, like many games it also has cheats included in it to assist those that are too lazy to play through the entire game, which consists of only 8 stages!  In my personal opinion and knowledge of the game, it is one of the first games I played and is considered one of my most favourite  games I have, it has good graphics, 2 player co-op/ versus capability and a good storyline. I have beaten it too many times to count, i have beaten it on all difficulties including the secret ones, and have competed with the top 10 people in the world for the record "speedrun" of the game, and as per tradition of first playing it at my uncles I play it every Friday and do a marathon of all 3 games, and always conquer them all. Streets of Rage also comprises one of the best video game soundtracks ever! Yuzo Koshiro the famous composer and creator of the SOR series music, is one of the most respected video game musicians ever, because of his genius works of art in the Streets of Rage series. The 3 given difficulty settings: Easy, Normal, Hard make it a fun time for those that all new to beat em up/ side scrolling games, while Hard (and the Maniac difficulty) make it a for sure challenge to those that are accustomed to fighting games.

Reviews for SOR:

"Streets of Rage is THE beat 'em up for Megadrive owners to buy. The action is great, especially with two players on-screen at once! For once, the players act as a team, using each other to produce moves not available in one-player mode. The graphics are great. The sprites are excellent, and at times the screen is chock-a-block with thugs ready to send you to your doom! The backdrops are similarly detailed, although the scenery on each level could've done with being a bit more varied. My one substantial gripe is the fact that the game doesn't present much of a challenge on EASY mode. Gary and I completed the game in two-player without using one continue! However, put the difficulty level on HARD and the action is made all the more enjoyable and challenging. Beat 'em up fans should check this out as soon as it hits the streets"

So in my opinion and from videos and a review fans of any type of old beat em up games, should absolutely try and find SOR or purchase it for the PS3 or XBOX 360 and experience the sensation that was the basis of all fighting games to come!

Red Dead Redemption

Intro of Game:

I bought Red Dead Redemption last year in March, unaware of the excitement and incredible gameplay that was in store, I was no "noob" to the Red Dead series for I played Red Dead Revolver when I was younger and was extremely disappointed on how the system of gameplay worked, but as soon as I booted it up I was amazed by the opening sequences that I thought were cutscenes, but instead turned out to be the game's menu (which was "interactive"), what I expected to be another "cowboy run and gun, stealing money" game turned out to be an incredible vast open world with plenty more action than your usual western game, with a "3 mode in one" game of Story, Multi, and a downloadable Zombie mode, the game is a definite player.

Game Structure:

The gameplay physics of RDR (and it's animation) was developed by Rockstar Games (a mega company with many more "sub-companies"), it is the same company that had developed the GTA series. The gameplay is an open ended world "sandbox style" of playing the game, the player is thrust into a world of the Old West, much different then that shown in movies, with easy controls that take only minutes to get accustomed to, it instantlybegins to show signs of being a good game. The odd feature with RDR (just like the GTA series) that most games have is a difficulty system, which RDR lacks but makes up for in it's story and actual gameplay style, the somewhat "difficulty" that Rockstar set for RDR is easy for both new and experienced players to action/shooter RPG game's and for that, difficulty isn't really a problem for anyone. Aside from the one set difficulty system, RDR promises over hours of gameplay focusing just on the story mode, without even playing the multi- mode (and believe me, the story is one of few that is actually worth playing). The animation side is also fairly detailed to show to the player that the gameplay itself seems like they the game is a real life setup, and not just computer generated. Another addition to the game that makes it on a fine line with the real Old West, is the type of music that is included in the game, with a very "westernly" theme, it helps bring RDR one step closer to becoming an exact retelling of on the Old West was "played out".

Opinions/My Telling of the Game:

When I first bought and began to play RDR, I was expecting to play the other types of "wild west games" that try and promote the West, but nothing can ever compare to the true genius that was put into Red Dead Redemption, I have beaten the game once, and can honestly say that the story is one of kind in games that is truly incredible, with a shocking ending to it as well, it makes it a game worth playing! The time it took for me to fully achieve 100% in the game's story took me a few weeks of on/off of playing the game, which seems long, but compared to GTA, it is a "walk in the park", even after I have beaten the game (which was a few months ago) I still continue to play the online multiplayer mode and achieve a higher rank in it's ranking system. At the end of E3 2010, RDR was named the 2010 Game of the Year, and has received awards at many different gaming conventions, with ratings of 9/10, and 10/10, RDR is considered one of the greatest games ever made. After fully going through many site's and seeing the same reviews on every site I have come to agree that RDR is a definite buyer!

Fortune is found in Drake's 2nd adventure to date in: Uncharted 2: Among Thieves!

After getting used to the type of playing style that is established in Uncharted: Drake's Fortune, I knew the 2nd game was the game for me, the gameplay style of: "Lara Croft/Indiana Jones meets James Bond" is truly perfected in UC 2: Among Thieves, no can really disliked about this, which is the main reason why it has won over 40 game of the year awards from E3 to PAX.  The "construction" of the game is truly memorable set in the Himalayan region of Tibet, following a gun slinging treasure hunter named Nathan Drake, searching for the legendary city of Shambala in the Himalaya's while evading a deadly Serbian war criminal. The real life animation developed for Uncharted was done by Naughty Dog (the same company that created Crash Bandicoot, and Jak and Daxter) and was highly more detailed, ND does a really good job also with the gameplay structure for the difficulty system presents a challenge for all gamers on it's hardest difficulty and provides helpful hints to players, in case one person was to get stuck and more over has music that suites each area and situation the character finds themselves in. Sadly, for many gamers out there that prefer to cheat their way to the finish of the game will be very unhappy, as there are no real cheats for the game, but walkthroughs on how to find all hidden collectables in the game (which can be found on Youtube, Gamespot, and IGN). I had bought the game when it was released on October 13, 2009 and still play it's story and co-op/competitive multiplayer, I have beaten it 3 times and continue ranking up in it's multiplayer ranking system. I like many that still play this game believe it is a "for sure buyer" and with 40-50 awards from different gaming conferences that it has attained (and achieved it's own Game of the Year Edition style of game) it is solid evidence that Uncharted 2 ( and the rest of the Uncharted series) are definite games to have on your gamer shelf. I look forward to give a blog on the next Uncharted; Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception, when it hits stores (and my PS3 slot) in November.
